Springtime in Paris! Saturday, March 26 at 1:00. The theme of the 8th Annual Tea at the Winthrop Library is the next best thing to going there, and it will only cost you $18. Tickets are now on sale at the library. Only 50 tickets are sold, so get your ticket soon. It's an enjoyable afternoon and the proceeds help to fund programs for children.

Pumpkin Party at the Library

The Annual Pumpkin Party will be held on Saturday, October 30 from 1-3 p.m. Captain Jack Parrot the pirate magician will be here at 1:00. Then there will be pumpkins to decorate, face painting and cookies and other treats. Everyone is welcome! There is no charge for this event.

Santa Day was great fun. 197 children signed up for the drawing, decorated cookies, made a Christmas ornament, had their faces painted and of course, told Santa what they wanted for Christmas. Thanks to the Winthrop Library Friends and the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce for putting on this event.

Terry Shoptaugh will discuss his book: "You Have Been Kind Enough to Assist Me". A book about Herman Stern, a North Dakota business man who saved 100 Jews in the years before the Holocaust. Desserts will be served. There is no charge for this event.

“This program is supported by the Minnesota Book Awards through grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services in conjunction with State Library Services, a division of the Minnesota Department of Education, and the Minnesota Library Foundation.”

Pumpkin Party

The annual Pumpkin Party will be held on Saturday, October 24 from 1-3 p.m. There will be a magic show/juggler at 1:00; he also makes balloon animals for the children. There will again be pumpkins to decorate, cookies to frost, face painting, treats and alot of fun. Thanks to the Winthrop Garden Club for again joining the Library Friends for this event. There is no charge for this event.

Summer Events at an End

It's been a full summer of events at the Winthrop Library. In August we had Dianne Gasch who presented a puppet show and workshop, followed by the annual Pizza Party. There were movies every Thursday afternoon (with snacks), the Junior Book Group, the Adult Book Group, a scrapbooking workshop--the girls decorated calendars, and Miss Winthrop read at a Story Time. It's time to take a deep breath and remember all of the fun we had.

Seventy nine children and many adults enjoyed the magic show with Robert Halbrook on June 17. Book bags were decorated, there were chalk, bubbles and popcorn outside of the library (and some popcorn inside the library). It was a fun day @ the library!

The adult reading Group will meet on Wednesday, June 24 at 1:00 to discuss "The Mermaid Chair" by Sue Monk Kidd.

Spring at the Library

May will be sunny and flowery, and busy as usual at the library. The Used Book Sale will begin on Saturday, May 16. Donations are being accepted now--books, audio books, dvds, videos, and anything else you would like to donate. Funds will be used for the children's programs.

The Adult Book Group selection in May is "Marley and Me" by John Grogan. The meeting will be held on the last Wednesday of the month, May 27 at 1:00 p.m. New readers are always welcome.

The library will be closed on Monday, May 25, Memorial Day.

Junior Book Group Changes.

School was canceled on Feb. 26 and so was the Book Group. The rescheduled date is Thursday, March 5 at 4:00 p.m. The March book gr oup will be as scheduled on Thursdasy, March 26 at 4:00 p.m. The book for that day is "Stranded" by Ben Miaelsen. Books are available at the library.

Knitting Group Changes

After school knitting will continue through March on Thursday afternoons at 4 p.m. Some may overlap with the book group, but knitting and chatting about books is fun, too.

Art Show

The Annual Art Show was well attended and the entries were beautiful, creative and fun and the talent of the entrants was inspiring. Best in Show by the judges was an oil painting by Rachel (Blunt) Nunez. The People's Choice Award was given to Stephanie Bauer for her Folk Art entry, which was clothing made of toothpicks and guitar picks!

Thanks to Doug Lindstrand, Winthrop native--now living in Alaska, who displayed many pieces of his wildlife art and sketchbooks. Doug has donated many of his books to the library and they may be checked out.

LIBRARY TEA

The Library Tea fundraiser, put on by the Winthrop Library Friends, is scheduled for Saturday, March 21 at 1:00 p.m. Tickets must be purchased in advance, and are available at the library. The fundraiser supports the library children's events and the Summer Library Porgramming. Donations are also welcome! Supplemental funds are provided by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

Daffodil Coloring Contest

Sibley County Unit of the American Cancer Society and the Winthrop Public Library are again sponsoring a coloring contest. Pictures may be picked up at the library and must be returned by Thrusday, March 12 at 4:00 p.m. There will be three age groups judged (preschool-age 5, 6-8 and 9-11), and the winners will receive a bouquet of daffodils.

Annual Art Show, Saturday Feb. 21.

Entry forms and information about the Art Show are now available at the Winthrop Library. The categories for judging will include many forms of needlework, folk art, wood working, and visual arts. There will be prizes awarded for the High School ages and older. Younger entrants will receive a ribbon.

Incentive Reading Program Continues

Kids: Sign up to read for 20 minutes, five times and you will receive a prize of your choice from the prize basket. You may continue to read and get prizes through March. Adults are also reading for prizes. They will get a prize for every four books read.

Knitting

Knitting will continue on Tuesday afternoons at 4 p.m. Start a project, or get help with a project on which you are already working. The group meets in the library. New knitters are welcome--instruction is available. This is a fun and casual hour--and a snack is provided.

February Reading Groups

The adult book group selection will be Julie and Julia by Julie Powell. In the space of one year, the author will cook every recipe (all 524 of them) in the Julia Child classic: Mastering the Art of French Cooking . The book details her adventure in cooking. The group meets on Wed. Feb. 25 at 1:00 p.m.

The junior book group will be reading Deep and Dark and Dangerous by Mary Downing Hahn. They will discuss other favorite books as well. The group meets on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 4:00 p.m.

Everyone is welcome at these groups and copies of the books are available at the library.

The library will be CLOSED on Monday, February 16, Presidents' Day.

Reading incentive programs for adults and children will begin on Monday, January 12.

Knitting for all ages and abilities will begin again on Tuesdays at 4 p.m. January 20.

USED BOOK SALE: January 17--24. The library will accept donations of books through January 16.

The Adult Book Group will discuss "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield" at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28.

The Junior Book Group will meet at 4 p.m. on Thursday, January 30 to discuss "Marley, A Dog Like No Other" by John Grogan.

Story Time will continue at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesdays. There is no pre-registration needed--children of all ages are welcome.

The library will be CLOSED on Thursday, January 1, New Year's Day and Monday, January 19, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

Story Time children had a fun time with one of our Winthrop Fire Fighters. He talked to them about fire safety, showed them what a fire fighter looks like with all of the gear on, and they even were able to try on his things. It was a fun time for everyone.

Adult Book Group Meets on Oct. 29

After an hiatus of a few months, the adult book group will again meet. The group will discuss Act of Treason by Minnesota author Vince Flynn. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 1:00 p.m. There are copies of the book at the library, or just come and listen to the discussion. From Publishers Weekly:When an al-Qaeda–style bomb attack on the motorcade of the Democratic presidential candidate, Georgia governor Josh Alexander, in Washington, D.C., a month before the November election kills the candidate's wife and several Secret Service agents, Michael Rapp uses all the tools at his disposal to investigate the claim of the now discredited head of the protective detail that a mysterious figure in a red baseball cap set off the fatal bomb. Rapp soon finds that the motive for the outrage may be personal rather than political.

We're excited and a bit sad to say that the final 2008 summer program is coming. We've had a fun and busy time, as always. On Friday, August 15 at 9:30 a.m., Chef Roberto will be here with Crazy Cookery, Unbelievable Magic, and Terrific Books!. Following the Chef, the Winthrop Library Friends will sponsor the annual Pizza Party. All ages are welcome and there will be no charge for any of the activities. In the afternoon, beginning at 1:30, there will be a movie and snacks.

Ventriloquist Shari Ellingson will be at the library on Friday, July 18 at 9:30 a.m. Come to see Bubba (a rascal) Alligator, Daisy the sweet-smelling skunk, Sweet Pea the loveable elephant, Violet the silly bird and Licorice (white, of course) rabbit, who will bring laughter and amusement to all ages! There was a great crowd of kids at the Reptile show on June 20. The presenter was very knowledgeable and the kids were able to see the animals close up and touch them--which they always like to do. We also had cookies!

Kick Off Party

The Summer Library Program Kick-off was fun for everyone. There was a balloon artist (specialties were swords, dogs and hats). The theme was the 150th birthday of Minnesota, so there was fishing for walleyes, pin the capital on the state, frost-your-own cupcakes, and more. It was a beautiful day outside, so there were bubbles, sidewalk chalk, and the popcorn wagon had free popcorn for kids (thanks to the Winthrop Library Friends). The children signed up for the incentive reading program and received a free book. What a great way to start the summer!
